Tadalafil is actually a chemical drug that inhibits PDE5 (phosphodiesterase type 5). It is currently available in the form of pills and is used to treat male patients with erectile dysfunction, or ED. The pills are marketed through the brand Cialis. Aside from being known to treat erectile dysfunction, generic Cialis has also been used to relieve other conditions such as pulmonary arterial hypertension. Generic Cialis was initially developed by ICOS, an American biotechnology firm based in Washington state, in partnership with Glaxo Wellcome (now GlaxoSmithKline), starting in mid 1991. ICOS, in 1993, studied the IC351 compound which stops the growth of the PDE5 enzyme. It was found out that when the PDE5 enzyme is inhibited, penile erection in men is encouraged. However, during that time, ICOS scientists were still not aware of that benefit. Then, in 1994, another compound, sildenafil citrate was found out to also inhibit PDE5, and this was proven by drug company Pfizer to encourage penile erection. Thus, Pfizer was the first drug company to produce a PDE5 inhibitor, Viagra. When it was finally launched worldwide, the world's first Tadalafil product was produced and made available by a joint venture firm between its initial developer ICOS, and Eli Lilly and Company, becoming Lilly ICOS. Cialis is available in three dosages - 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg. They are yellow in color and their shape resembles the almond nut. Tadalafil tablets also have a film coating. Meanwhile, a Tadalafil tablet that shall address pulmonary arterial hypertension is currently being developed and will be available in 40 mg doses. Tadalafil tablets for pulmonary arterial hypertension will be known through the brand name Adcirca.
Generic Cialis Tadalafil has been made available in the United States starting December 2003. The United States FDA, or Food and Drug Administration, approved the Sale of Cialis, with it being only the third erectile dysfunction drug pill for prescription after approving sildenafil (branded as Viagra) in 1998 and vardenafil (branded as Levitra) only months before Cialis' approval. Cialis has also earned another nickname "The Weekend Pill," due to its ability to be effective for 36 hours. As with Viagra and Levitra, Cialis is prescribed by doctors as a medication that should be used only "as needed". However, among the three available cures for erectile dysfunction, only generic Cialis is also recommended as a medication that can be taken once a day because it has been available of low dosages of 2.5 and 5 mg.
After more than five years, Tadalafil was also approved as a drug for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension in the United States in May 2009. This US FDA approval has also made other parts of the world do regulatory reviews for the effectiveness of Tadalafil for pulmonary arterial hypertension. They are expected to follow suit in approving the drug for this use. United Therapeutics, an American drug firm was given by Eli Lilly in November of 2008 the exclusive rights to make the drug available to the United States market for pulmonary arterial hypertension treatment. It has been documented that Eli Lilly paid United Therapeutics $150 million upfront for this deal.
